To determine whether a regimen starting with verapamil with a novel delivery system is at least as effective as a regimen starting
with the choice of first line 'standard of care' as recommended by the Joint National Committee (JNC-V) on Detection, Evaluation
and Treatment of High Blood Pressure in reducing the occurrence of fatal cardiovascular (CV) disease, stroke, or non-fatal
myocardial infarction (MI) in patients with primary hypertension
